Frequently Asked Questions
Seasoned firewood is defined as firewood that has been left to dry in log form in our yard. The moisture content may vary from log to log and some additional drying time may be necessary. When we say the wood is seasoned, it is for burning this winter.
How much firewood you need will depend on how much you burn and use in your fireplace.
In New Zealand Location also plays a role, here on the East Coast of Gisborne we are prone to cold blasting Southerlies and we would burn more firewood than for example, Auckland.
For a standard-size house that uses its fireplace daily as the only heating source during winter, expect to need approximately 8- 12 cubic metres.
Firewood is best stored of the ground, if possible (old pallets work wonderfully for this) A nice covered location, that has access to warmth from the sun and fresh air is ideal for storing wood.
Good airflow is crucial to keep your wood stored and kept moister-free. Wood should be stacked with gaps to allow airflow . The ends of wood should be exposed, as this enhances the drying process.
We strongly urge customers, not to cover firewood with a Tarp. This will only damage your firewood, it will retain moisture from the ground, and become sodden and moldy.

Here at Mac's Firewood , we sell our firewood by the cubic meter , starting at 2 cubic meter loads. Our delivery bins have been made to measure 4 cubic meters, we can take up to 8 cubic meters on 1 trip. Some may be familiar with the old measurement of a cord, this is 3.6 cubic meters in total. So our loads are supper generous in comparison, excellent bang for your buck.
In New Zealand wood is sold as a thrown or tossed measure, this means that the volume of wood is calculated as if the wood has been dumped into a container and not stacked. 1 tossed cubic metre will reduce by approx 1/3 when stacked neatly.
